Canción muda, 2017

Bird audio archive, bird cages, feathers, guitar strings, stones, cable & computer controlled dc motors.

Variable dimensions. Le Bon Accueil – Lieu d’arts sonores / Les Ateliers Du Vent, Rennes, France.

Cancion muda (en. muted song) is a sound installation that functions as the hybrid between an aviary and a precarious stringed musical instrument. It draws on the process of listening and observing bird songs recordings reproduced by mechanical means.

The installation is fed by an archive of audio recordings of different birds, which instead of being played back through common speakers, are reproduced as motion in a network of dc motors. The motors, tipped with bird feathers, hang inside bird cages prepared with piano strings, stones and tuning pegs. From the computer bird song recordings are converted into the electrical impulses making the feathers to scratch against piano strings which are streched and tuned inside the cages.

The sound patterns heard from the fluttering of feathers and the strings resonating in the metal, are articulated by dynamics of the birdsong´s audio characteristics, such as silence, repetition and irregularities in its melody structure.

Munies de cordes de guitares et de plumes motorisées en guise de médiator elles deviendront elles-mêmes des oiseaux de métal au ramage inouïe.
